Master of Fine Arts student Dana Potter grew up working beside her mother, a ceramic artist, in an arts center in her small Iowa hometown of Okoboji. “I saw her bringing people together and creating a sense of community through art,” said Potter, who will be attending UT’s highly ranked printmaking program as part of the first class of recipients of the Tennessee Fellowship for Graduate Excellence.

For Robert Taylor, education has been a constant in a life of change. Taylor, of Nashville, is part of the incoming class of Volunteer Bridge students. The dual-enrollment program invites eligible students to live on the UT campus while completing their first year at Pellissippi State Community College.

Freshman Joanna Martin—part of UT’s new 1794 Scholars Program—may have just started her college classes, but she’s already enjoying the full Volunteer experience. Last week, she spent time volunteering at the Muse and Knoxville Area Rescue Ministries as part of Ignite Serves, a four-day leadership and service program for 500 students run by UT’s Center for Leadership and Service.

The Volunteer Bridge Program, UT’s dual enrollment program with Pellissippi State Community College, is welcoming 210 students this year—the largest group since the program launched in 2011.

US Army veteran and incoming sophomore Rachel Danneker decided to become a Volunteer even though she’d never set foot on our campus before. Danneker joins a growing population of veterans and active-duty service members who enjoy a range of services and a supportive network that helps them transition to college life.

Over the weekend, more than 4,000 new students moved into residence halls and attended a picnic, Torch Night, and Rocky Top Rally as a welcome to campus.

The first recipients of the Tennessee Fellowship for Graduate Excellence have been chosen. The new $4 million fellowship program, administered by the Graduate School, was designed to help UT recruit top graduate students from around the world.

UT has long been recognized as a great place for student veterans, and now the welcoming atmosphere is even warmer. The campus’s new Veterans Resource Center on the ground floor of Hodges Library is open.

Classes begin next week and more than 6,000 new students are expected on Rocky Top. As of today, UT is expecting 4,828 freshmen and 1,232 transfer students. Numbers change daily and aren’t final until the 14th day of class. “We’re trending to have a larger freshman class than last year,” said Kari Alldredge, vice provost for enrollment management.
